Marie Lillian (Hanigan) Houston was born on December 8, 1921, to Thomas and Catherine (Murphy) Hanigan in Boyer Township near Dunlap, Iowa. She attended Boyer Township Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph's Parochial High School. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College & the University of Omaha. Marie married Edward W. Houston Jr. on May 21, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. She taught at Boyer Township Schools for two years, Dow City School for four years, Dunlap Community School for eight years, and substitute taught for several years in both Dow City and Dunlap.

Marie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Dunlap. She served as a Eucharistic Minister. She also volunteered her time at St. Joseph's Parochial School by supervising the lunch program.

Marie died on Monday, December 16, 2013, at the Dunlap Care Center at the age of 92 years and eight days.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Edward; two brothers, John Hanigan and his wife Betty and Jerry Hanigan. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Houston and husband Robert Riddle of Green Valley, Arizona; son, Martin Houston and his wife Norma of Broomfield, Colorado; three grandchildren, Heather and her husband Brent Butterfield, Christina and her husband Brad Cooper and Sean Houston; three great grandchildren, Collin, Ethan & Gemma; sisters, Kathleen Janssen of Johnston, Iowa, Marjorie Brosnahan of Logan, Iowa and Virginia and her husband Jerry Klein of Dunlap, Iowa; sister-in-law, Patsy Hanigan of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
