   Marjorie Louise Swain Gambs was born in Pottawattamie County, Iowa on September 21, 1910, to Thomas Howland Swain IV and Lois Gertrude Whipple Swain.  She grew up in Southern Iowa, living near Walnut, Lewis, and Allerton where she graduated from high school in 1927.  After a year of normal school, she taught country school.  She then graduated from Iowa State University in 1935 with a major in Home Economics and taught in New Hartford and Havelock before coming to Dunlap in the fall of 1939.
   
   She met Phil M. Gambs when he came to teach a night school course and they were married one year later on February 26, 1942.  They lived in Dunlap all their married lives, raising six children and being active in the community.  After Phil's death in 1995, Marjorie moved to Jackson, Tennessee.
   
   Marjorie was an active member of the First Congregational Church.  She was also a member of Eastern Star and Past Matrons Club, American Association of University Women, County Republican Women of Harrison County, Retired Teacher's Association, and Entre Nous.  She also served on the Harrison County Extension Board.  She was honored by her children in the Plaza of Heroines outside Carrie Chatman Catt Hall at Iowa State University.
   
   She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and two sisters, and her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Gambs.  She is survived by her six children, Carl Gambs and his wife Bonnie of Kansas City, MO, Ed Gambs and his wife Eleanor of Logan, IA, John Gambs of Red Oak, IA, Margaret and her husband Bob Duncan of Jackson, TN, Ruth and her husband David Johnson of Fort Dodge, IA, and Janet and her husband Russ Stammer of Rochester, MN; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters Lois Raps of Cook, MN and Marian and her husband Chester Peek of Norman, Oklahoma; many loving nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
