May Vesta (Swanson) Green was born on May 15, 1920, to Stenos and Agnes (Johnson) Swanson in Little Sioux Township in rural Monona County, Iowa. She was raised near Pisgah and attended country school and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1937. In 1939, May married Virgil Green. The couple lived in the Pisgah and Moorhead area. May was the head cook at the Pisgah Community School for many years. The couple moved into Pisgah in 1949.

May became a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Moorhead in 1946. In 1949 she transferred to the Pisgah American Legion Post #408. She was an active member until the Legion closed. May was an active member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. She also held many offices in the United Methodist Women. May was well known for her baking ~ especially cinnamon rolls, bread, and cookies. She especially enjoyed making treats for the school teachers and other lucky recipients in town.

May died on Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

May was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil Green; son, Allen Green; two daughters-in-law, Carole Anne Green and Merry Green; brother, Curtis Swanson; and three sisters, Amy Beall, Vivian Davis, and Helen Swanson. She is survived by her two sons, Larry Green of Orson, Iowa, Mearl Green of Council Bluffs, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Karen Green of Tylertown, Mississippi; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Lloyd of San Diego, California; and many other relatives and friends.
