Richard Francis "Spike" Monahan was born on March 9, 1951, in Harlan, Iowa to John Joseph and Helen (Miller) Monahan. Richard attended country school near Woodbine, then Woodbine Public School and the Logan Public Schools. Richard then did odd jobs in the Woodbine area including: working with Rex Rains at Rex's Meat Market and at Charlie Benjamin's locker.
Richard loved spending time with his family; the little ones always brought a smile to his face. He enjoyed joking and teasing his family and friends. He was good at giving others a hard time. He enjoyed selling tickets for the Woodbine Rodeo and loved playing euchre ~ winning many tournaments at the Corn Palace. He also spent time playing scratch off tickets, and he usually won. Richard helped keep the town clean by picking up the discarded pop and beer cans for many years. Recently he enjoyed playing Bingo games at the nursing home.
Richard died on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 62 years, five months and 29 days.
Richard was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Helen Monahan of Woodbine, Iowa; four siblings, Alvin Monahan and his wife Gloria of Millard, Nebraska, David Monahan and his wife Deb of Shenandoah, Iowa, Joan and her husband Roger Androy of Logan, Iowa, John Monahan and his wife Peggy of Woodbine, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
