Ronald Gordon Nichols was born October 5, 1942, to Lyle and Eula (Carson) Nichols in Moorhead, Iowa. He was raised in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1960. Ron then worked several different jobs before joining the United States Air Force in 1961. He served his entire four years of enlistment in Lincoln, Nebraska. Ron married Krystal Kuhlmann on October 6, 1962. The couple farmed, trucked, and did custom wheat harvesting in Oklahoma, Kansas and western Nebraska.

Ron was a member of the Moorhead Christian Church where he served as a deacon and occasionally filled in by giving the Sunday sermon. He was also a member of the Soil Conservation Board and of the Masons Elk Lodge #586. Ron loved his grandchildren. He had a passion for sprint car racing and shared this passion with his family. Ron also enjoyed watching western movies, especially movies with John Wayne and he was a Husker fan.

Ron died December 10, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 69 years, two months and five days.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Sharon Kay Nichols. He is survived by his wife, Krystal Nichols of Moorhead, Iowa; two sons, Todd (JoAnn) Nichols and John (Vivian) Nichols all of Moorhead, Iowa; five grandchildren, Courtney (Jon) Lee of Moorhead, Iowa, Iris (Marc) Schmidt of St. Louis, Missouri, Brittney Nichols and fiancé Devin Merritt of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Caitlin Nichols of Omaha, Nebraska, Lyle Nichols of Moorhead, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Alivia and Bennett Lee; brother, Don (Dolly) Nichols of Sumter, South Carolina; and many other relatives and friends.
