Rose Maude (Probasco) Heistand was born April 7, 1919, to Albert and Martha (Morton) Probasco in rural Woodbine, Iowa. She was raised near Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1936. Rose continued her learning and had taken some college courses over the years. Rose married Lawrence Heistand on December 14, 1943, at the First Christian Church's parsonage. The couple farmed near Woodbine until they moved into town in December of 1965. She taught country school, piano, guitar and accordion lessons to almost 500 students. Lawrence died on March 6, 1990.
Rose was a member of the First Christian Church in Woodbine. She had been the church organist and was very active in the ladies groups as well. Rose enjoyed painting and created the mural in the Christian Church basement.
Rose died on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at her home in Woodbine at the age of 95 years, nine months, and 21 days.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence Heistand; son, Carl Heistand; daughter, Norma Heistand; and two grandsons, John Heistand and Bryan Scichilone. She is survived by five children, Norman (Dorothy) Heistand of Vinton, Iowa, Rita (Marshall) Scichilone of Woodbine, Iowa, Henry (Terri) Heistand of Phoenix, Arizona, Diane (Fred) White of Neola, Iowa and Margaret (Gary) Reihman of Williamsburg, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
