Russell Small

Russell Lee Small was born on December 9, 1931, near Orson, Iowa to parents Ellis and Ellen (Armstrong) Small. He attended Orson country school for one year, then Coffman country school for four years and then Mondamin public schools and graduated from Mondamin High School in 1950. In December of 1950 he entered the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War. In March of 1951 Russ married Joyce Copp in Denver, Colorado. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1953, the couple returned to Mondamin and continued the family business ~ Small's Fruit Farm. Russ was the fourth generation of apple growers.
Russ was a member of the Mondamin Methodist Church, the Mondamin Jesse Strong American Legion Post #378, and the Valley Masonic Lodge #4232 AF & AM. He had been the Raglin Township Clerk and Assessor, Legion Secretary Adjunctant for 35 years, on the Fruit Growers Association, Harrison County REC Board, NIPCO Board, and on the County Veterans Affairs Board. Russ enjoyed golfing, playing cards, traveling, fishing and he loved being around people.
Russ died on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 74 years, one month and 12 days.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Mondamin, Iowa; four children, Steve Small and his wife Coleen of Kansas City, Missouri, Coleen and her husband Keith Roemen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kathy and her husband Gary Duncan of Omaha, Nebraska and Jim Small and his wife Renee of Mondamin, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Small and his wife Deanna of Magnolia, Iowa and Gary Small and his wife Joan of Mondamin, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.
