Susan Mary Hein was born on July 7, 1957, in Denison, Iowa to parents, Charles R. and Joan J. (Hugron) Hein. She grew up on the family farm outside of Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1975. Susan continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa where she graduated with an accounting degree in 1979. In May 1979 she was awarded the Elija Watt Sells Award for scoring in the top 1% of the Certified Public Accountant examination. She worked as a CPA and financial tax manager for several firms and organizations throughout her professional life.
Susan was known for her vibrant personality and zest for life along with her sharp wit. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel by bicycle through Europe and later through New Zealand. She eventually developed a passion for riding Ducati motorcycles. A dedicated wordsmith, she challenged herself daily by completing the New York Times crossword puzzle without fail. In addition to her intellectual pursuits, Susan found solace and joy in the serene landscapes of northern California and with her beloved cats, Bella and Mimma. She eventually settled in Sonoma, California, where she enjoyed retirement surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Susan died on October 1, 2022, at her home in Sonoma at the age of 65 years, two months and 24 days.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Vincent Hein; and sister-in-law, Janis Dianne Hein. She is survived by her brother, James Hein of Houston, Texas; sister, Patricia Hein and her husband Steve Sjoberg of Austin, Texas; niece, Rev. Dr. Claire Hein Blanton and husband Jack Blanton III of Bellaire, Texas; nephew, Preston Hein of Houston, Texas; great nephew, Jack Blanton IV of Bellaire, Texas and great niece, Josephine (Joy) Blanton of Bellaire, Texas.
