Timothy Ray Steckelberg was born on December 23, 1951, in Carroll, Iowa to Vernon and Darlene (Atkins) Steckelberg. He lived in Manilla, Iowa until the family moved to California and Delaware before coming back to Iowa. Tim was united in marriage to the love of his life, Janene Ann Carritt on August 31, 1974. They were blessed with a daughter Carman, and later on their son-in-law, Joel Harris and grandson, Grant. Tim worked in farming with Burcham Farms and drove school bus early in his career. He then worked in nuclear power plants throughout the United States and retired from the OPPD Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant. After retirement Tim enjoyed helping Johnson Farms with their fall harvest.
Tim loved the outdoors and embraced every opportunity to enjoy it. Whether he was fishing, hiking the Loess Hills, biking, kayaking, boating, or simply enjoying nature, he found joy in the world around him. Many memories were made at their second home on the Lake of the Ozarks with family and dear extended family and friends. Tim enjoyed traveling with Janene and their friends. He traveled most of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and from Catalina Island to Martha’s Vineyard. Other adventures included Belize, Costa Rica, Punta Cana, many Mexico destinations, and most recently Rome to Barcelona. Tim volunteered at the Watson Steam Train Depot and helped at the Matthew House food pantry. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to any neighbor or friend, wherever it was needed. Tim also loved sports. He enjoyed watching all sports, first when Carman was playing and then Grant, and volunteered to help many youth sports teams, offering advice and encouragement. More than anything, Tim cherished his family. Janene, Carman, Joel, and Grant were the center of his world and to them he was a top-notch husband, dad, and grandpa.
Tim passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2026, at his home outside of Missouri Valley, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, five months and 30 days.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Steckelberg; Janene's parents, Kenny and Marge Carritt; and brothers-in-law, Jim Schroeder, Mike Carritt, Terry Carritt, and Marty Carritt. He is survived by his wife Janene; daughter, Carman and her husband Joel Harris; grandson, Grant Harris; sister, Charlene Schroeder; brothers-in-law, John Carritt and his wife Sandy and Dan Carritt; sisters-in-law, Mary and her husband Tim Hamer, Carla Carritt, Helen Carritt, and Rhonda and her husband Kevin Johnson; and many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
