Twyla Marie (Barnum) Hein was born on March 18, 1926, near Woodbine to Floyd and Bernese (Schneider) Barnum. She received her education in Harrison County rural schools and graduated from Woodbine High School with a Normal Training Certificate in 1943 at the age of 17. She taught at Sunny Glen School for two years. On September 14, 1945, Twyla married Floyd Hein and they were able to celebrate 65 years of marriage before he died in 2010. The couple lived in the Logan and Dunlap rural areas except for the seven years the family lived in Greenfield, Iowa. As a farm wife she gardened, canned, cooked wonderful meals and baked many a cookie-in her later years if you visited, you left with a bag of cookies. She also did her share of chores helping with cattle, hogs and sheep. She worked at Perfection Form Company for many years. Never one to sit still, after retiring from there she painted and cleaned for people.
Twyla and Floyd were members of St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. At an early age she learned to dance and was a life-long dancer, especially loving to dance to a waltz. They traveled to many states and Canada throughout the years with the Black Hills area being her favorite. She was an avid reader and did crossword puzzles daily, working them up until she became ill.
Twyla died on October 9, 2020, at the Dunlap Specialty Care Center at the age of 94 years six months and 21days.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Floyd. She is survived by two daughters, Kristin (George) Ford of Lafayette, LA and Irene (Gene) McGinn of Logan; four grandchildren, Brian (Andrea) Ford of Youngsville, LA, Nichole (Jeff) Allen of Logan, Erin McGinn and fiancé Chris Sanders (and son, Mason) of Blair, NE and Thomas (Allison) McGinn of Lincoln NE; and six great grandchildren, Grant and Graham Ford; Alex, Nathan and Camden Allen, and Baby J McGinn due in April; sister, Lyro Knights of Harlan IA; and many other special friends and relatives.
