Velma Marie Verdella (Muell) Mahlberg was born June 3, 1939, to Nicholas and Clara (Kramer) Muell in Panama, Iowa. Velma received her first communion and was confirmed in the Catholic Church. She was enough younger than her siblings that she was the flower girl in all but one of their weddings. She told her sister, Arlene, that her marriage ended in a divorce because, "You're the only one I didn't run along with!" Velma graduated from Missouri Valley High School. Velma married Walter "Butch" Mahlberg.

Velma was an avid gardener and canner when she was married to Butch. Recently she enjoyed working on puzzles.
