Walter Speichert

Woodbine, Iowa

Walter William Speichert was born May 9, 1928, to Wilhelm and Else (Fensch) in Stettin, Germany. He died on July 2, 2011, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 83 years, one month, and 23 days. Walter moved to the United States when he was 25 years old. While living in Germany he was in the German Army. Walter married Ele Neumann at the Cross Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska on June 13, 1953. He later joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1956. During his service he received the Medal of Honor. He worked as a mason in Omaha. The couple moved to Woodbine in 1999.

Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed making wine, cooking and baking. He enjoyed spending time in the out of doors. He also enjoyed dancing and listening to music.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Ele Speichert of Woodbine, Iowa; five children, Ralph Speichert and his wife Cindy of Cedar Creek, Nebraska, Suzanne and her husband Rick Briggs of Bellevue, Nebraska, Vern Speichert of Woodbine, Iowa, Diane and her husband Sam Jacobs of Woodbine, Iowa, Debbie and her husband Chad Stewart of Logan, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
