William Philip “Bill” Schreck was born on January 28,1939, in Dedham, Iowa to Bill and Rose (Thein) Schreck. Bill grew up in Carroll, Iowa, where he attended school and graduated from Kuemper High School in 1957. Following high school, he drove a truck and hauled lumber. Bill was also a member of the Army Reserves. Bill married the love of his life, Mary O’Connell on November 16, 1963. Together they built a life centered around family and were blessed with five children. Bill and Mary made Omaha their home for several years before moving to an acreage in Mondamin, Iowa in 1975.
Bill spent much of his working life as a meat cutter, working at various stores throughout his career before retiring from No Frills. Retirement, however, did little to slow him down. A hard-working man by nature, Bill continued working part-time as a meat cutter even after officially retiring. Over the years, he raised cattle and took great pride in caring for the acreage. He enjoyed spending time in his garden, canning what he grew, and tending to his peach trees. Bill also grew grapes, which he used to make his own homemade wine. He was also known for his homemade sausage. Hard working and tough, Bill was never one to complain. He simply did what needed to be done. Bill’s strength, determination and dependable nature were qualities that remained with him throughout his life. He was a member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Bill died on September 9, 2026, at Parsons House in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, seven months, and 12 days.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary O’Connell Schreck; and siblings, Gerald Schreck, Robert Schreck, Mary Rose Nagl, JoAnn LeRiger, and Paul Schreck. He is survived by his children, Mary Cartmill of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Linda and Mel Heintz of Ankeny, Iowa, Angie and Steven Olson of Omaha, Nebraska, Bill Schreck of Mondamin, John and Christy Schreck of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; grandchildren, Kate, Andy, Jeff, Nate, Ryan, Sam, Lindsey, Stephen, Emily, Melanie, Mary Rose, Ben, Elizabeth, Bree, Ashley, Bill, and Royal; 21 great grandchildren; siblings, James and Ione Schreck of Sioux City, Iowa, Betty Lou and Mark Schwery of Vail, Iowa, Elaine Nieland of Carroll, Iowa, and Connie Bruner of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and many other family and friends.
