Betty Jean (Roberts) Murphy was born on September 20, 1951, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Robert J. and Ruth Clarice (Hull) Roberts. Betty grew up in rural Dunlap, attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Dunlap Community School in 1969. While in high school, she was a baton major, played basketball, ran track/jumped hurdles and worked at Dick’s U Save Meat Locker. After graduation, she began her banking career at First National Bank in the Woodman Tower. Betty’s daughter, Christine Marie “Chrissy”, was born on April 16, 1971. Later, Betty moved back to Dunlap and worked at Norwest Bank in Denison which later changed to Wells Fargo. Betty married Bernard “Barney” Murphy on August 8, 1980. She ended her banking career at Farmer’s Trust and Savings in Woodbine, retiring at age 62.

Betty was a lifetime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing and watching golf. She loved cooking, gardening, and watching the Food Network. She crocheted afghans and baby blankets. Betty liked to play the lottery and put puzzles together. She was an avid Nebraska Husker fan. She enjoyed participating in her Fantasy Football league. She treasured her family and extended family.

Betty died on February 5, 2020, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 68 years, four months and 16 days.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Barney Murphy on January 14, 2017; daughter, Christine on October 15, 1981; infant siblings, Charlotte and John; sister, Rita Doty; and brothers-in-law, Kelly Murphy, Mike Murphy and Clancy Murphy. She is survived by siblings, Kenneth David (Georgia) Roberts of Dunlap, Rachael Bliss of Asheville, North Carolina, Mary Jane (Roger) Zehner and Patty Schwery all of Dunlap; siblings-in-law, Don Doty of Crescent, Iowa; Lorraine (Kenny) Houston, Ann (Denny) Behrendt, Mary (Ron) Fouts all of Dunlap, Wally (Anita) Murphy and Ed Murphy all of Omaha, Cathy Murphy, Karol Murphy both of Dunlap, Lois Murphy of Vail; special adopted daughter, Mary  (Scott) Roberts and children, Tonya and David; her two beloved cats; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
