Beth Darlene Thompson was born on November 19, 1926, to Paul and Violet (Hulsebus) Hulsebus in Defiance, Iowa. She grew up in Defiance and attended school there in her younger years. She graduated from Woodbine High School with the class of 1943. After graduation she worked for an attorney and then at Vern Howe Insurance Company. Darlene married Earl Dale Thompson on April 22, 1950. She spent many years raising her family. She worked various jobs over the years including: the Dunlap Locker, Dubuque Packing in Denison for over 14 years, as a waitress, and a security guard at IBP.

Darlene loved to spend time with her family. She had a passion for drawing; she was a wonderful artist with a creative imagination. She would make homemade cards for her family and friends. She also enjoyed bird watching, gardening, caring for her flowers and cooking.

Darlene died on May 7, 2020, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, attaining the age of 93 years, five months and 18 days.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl D. Thompson on June 8, 1980; son-in-law, Eugene Gilleland; two sisters, Gladys Dudding and Inez Johnson; and brothers, Milo Hulsebus and infant Paul Hulsebus. She is survived by her five children, Vivian Gilleland, Steve “Biggie” Thompson, and Beth and her husband Joe Sullivan all of Dunlap, Iowa, Richard “Henry” Thompson and his wife Shawna of Manilla, Iowa, and Cynthia and her husband Don Vollbrecht of Norfolk, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Calvin Hulsebus and his wife Phoebe of Dow City, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
