Dorothy Theresa (Gross) Coenen was born on October 10, 1928, to Joe and Josephine (Blum) Gross in Earling Iowa. She was raised near Earling and attended school graduating from St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling in 1946. Dorothy met Henry Coenen, Jr. and the couple married on April 19, 1949. The couple moved to Omaha and then to Dunlap before settling west of Woodbine. They then moved north of Woodbine and raised their family. She worked at several places, but she loved working at Pronto/Casey’s because she loved visiting with all the people and all the people loved visiting with her. Everyone loved her sandwiches that she made special just for them. She also worked at Moore Brothers’ Grocery Store, farmed with her husband, worked at the Woodbine Locker and Bob’s Café.

Dorothy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved to pick bittersweet in the fall and share it with her friends. Dorothy enjoyed refinishing furniture for herself and others and she also enjoyed playing the slot machines. Her favorite place to be was on her swing on her front porch spending time with her grandkids and friends. She made blankets for each grandchild and great grandchild as well as embordered each birth announcement. In addition to all of this she enjoyed teaching the great grandkids how to sew, crochet, quilt and also bake. When Dorothy became a resident of Rose Vista she enjoyed visiting with all the other residents and visitors.

Dorothy died Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home at the age of  91 years, 11 months, and 27 days.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Coenen; two sons, Joe Coenen and Father Tom Coenen and five siblings, Leo Gross, Leona Babel, Alphonse Gross,    Helen Bissen and Robert Gross. She is survived by three children, Gary (Julie) Coenen of Woodbine, Iowa, Mary (Todd) Heistand of Woodbine, Iowa, Jackie (Scott) Clark of Pisgah, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; four siblings, Eugene “Sonny” Gross of Holstein, Iowa, Jerry (Sharon) Gross of Earling, Iowa, Marie “Dots” (Charlie) Klein of Earling, Iowa and Vern (Ginger) Gross of California; and many other relatives and friends.
