John W. (Jack) Thompson was born on February 4, 1931, to Avery Sr. and Rose (Cooper) Thompson in Chalco, Nebraska.  His parents and family moved to Dunlap, Iowa and he graduated from Dunlap High School in 1948.  After graduation, he briefly served in the U.S. Navy and then attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska.  Jack married Carol L. McCord on September 12, 1953.  Jack and Carol and daughter Jackie moved to El Cajon, California for four years where he worked with his brother Art.  Their son Jeff was born during their time in El Cajon.  They moved back to Dunlap in 1958, where sons Terry and Tony were born.  Upon retiring, Jack and Carol moved to Henderson, Nevada in 2003.   Jack and Carol were married 63 years when Carol passed away on 21 February, 2017.

Jack was proprietor of Thompson Service Station for many years in Dunlap and also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for over 30 years.  He and his brother Avery, Jr also were in business with a cow-calf operation which Carol called their hobby.

Jack was known for his ready smile and sense of humor.  An avid sports fan, he particularly followed the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.  He enjoyed summer vacations with his family attending Cardinals games in St. Louis, Missouri and Cardinals games at six other Major League baseball stadiums.  His love of sports took him on several trips to Des Moines for the high school state basketball championships, attending the regional Golden Gloves Boxing competitions in Omaha, Nebraska, and annual trips to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado.  In his younger days, he raced stock cars in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  He also enjoyed playing cards especially euchre.  He was a member of the Dunlap Golf Club and enjoyed Thursday Men’s Nights.  Jack loved spending time with his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jack died on May 5, 2020, at Infinity Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada, attaining the age of 89 years, three months, and one day.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife Carol L. Thompson; brothers Ward, Clarence, Art, Don, Earl, and Avery Jr., and sisters Ruth Bonsall, Helen Talbert, and Rosemary Jacobsen.  He is survived by his four children, Jackie Keith of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jeffrey Thompson and his wife Pam of Johnstown, Colorado, Terry Thompson of Derby, Kansas, and Anthony Thompson and his wife Rita of Murrieta, California; 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
