Lorraine Mae (Murphy) Houston was born on November 3, 1961, to Eugene and Ellie (Arthur) Murphy in Ralston, Nebraska. Lorraine attended school in Ralston through her 8th grade year. The Murphy family then moved to Dunlap, Iowa, in August 1976, and Lorraine graduated with the class of 1980 from Dunlap High School. On September 22, 1984, Lorraine married Kenny Houston at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Lorraine worked for Dubuque Packing Company in Denison, Community Bank in Dunlap, managed Heartland Cellular in Denison for 10 years, and then finally managed Wireless World in Denison for nearly 10 years.
Lorraine loved warm weather and spending time on any beach. She especially cherished being around family and friends while camping and boating in Okoboji. Many people knew her as “The Cell Lady” as she was truly passionate about her job, and she would always go the extra mile to help anyone with their cellphones. Lorraine also spent a lot of time supporting and giving to others, including Relay for Life and an impactful, life-changing mission trip to Haiti, which she continued to support long after returning home. Lorraine enjoyed attending music concerts of all genres with family and friends, and she had a special knack for finding the best tickets at the last minute. Lorraine was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan who was ecstatic to watch them win the Super Bowl this year. Lorraine treasured a hot, dark cup of coffee in the mornings. She also enjoyed being active and going for long walks outdoors. Lorraine cherished her family, including their dog, Tucker.
Lorraine died on April 22, 2020, at her home surrounded by family, at the age of 58 years, five months, and 19 days.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Clancy, Kelly, Mike, and Barney Murphy; brother-in-law, Lawrence Trofholz; sister-in-law, Betty Murphy; and niece, Chrisy Murphy.
