Richard Nels Swain was born on April 5, 1940, in Soldier, Iowa to parents LeRoy ‘Roy’ and Lena (Hamlin) Swain. He graduated from Soldier Consolidated High School in the class of 1958. Richard farmed with his father. He had numerous interests and served on the Soldier Valley Election Board, Soldier Valley Homes, Longlines Telephone Board and West Central Community Action in Harlan.

Richard was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church and served on the church board. He was a caregiver for numerous people in the Soldier Moorhead area. Richard was a people person, and he made many friends wherever he was.

Richard died on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 81 years, nine months and 15 days.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Swain and Terry Swain. He is survived by his four sisters, Kay Harfst of Webster City, Iowa, Nancy Swain of Omaha, Nebraska, Sandra Tillson of Denver, Colorado and Kathy and her husband Dennis Kennedy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and several nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
