Richard Wilson

Richard Lee Wilson was born on July 19, 1927, in Silver City, Iowa to Claude and Leatha (Darnold) Wilson. He was raised in Mills County and then he moved to the family farm between Honey Creek and Loveland. Richard graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1948. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines; fighting in the Korean War in the Chosen Reservoir Battle. Richard married Shirley Bunch on May 20, 1952, in California. After his honorable discharge the couple moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where Richard worked for the UP Railroad. They then moved to the family farm. Richard retired from UP in 1992.

Richard was a member of the Missouri Valley Christian Church. After his retirement he joined the Gideon’s. He enjoyed gardening and had a huge garden. In his younger years he enjoyed horses. The railroad was his work, but it was also his pleasure.

Richard died on October 22, 2020, at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 93 years, three months and three days.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings, Lloyd, Charles, Leon, Lewis, William, Gerald, and Phillip Wilson, Ruby Wilson, Claudine Carberry and Alice Mendenhall. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Wilson of Missouri Valley; five children, Dale (Stephanie) Wilson of Escondido, California, Rodney (Patra) Wilson of Richland, Nebraska, Sharon (Mark) Leonard of Onawa, Iowa, Dennis (Charlene) Wilson of Columbus, Nebraska, and Sandi (Gerald) Zaiser of Logan, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
